What you need for fire safety training

Use this shopping list to prepare a practical fire safety training session from registration through hands-on exercises. It covers refreshments, serving items, presentation equipment and protective gear for the practice area. Check quantities against your participant list, especially for goggles, gloves and helmets if people will practise at the same time. Arrange specialist training equipment early, because fire extinguishers, smoke machines and hose reels may need separate delivery or collection.

Tips

  • Count one coffee cup, glass, plate and cutlery set per participant, then add 10% extra for breakage, late arrivals and second servings. Provide at least one water jug for every 10 people.
  • For a half-day session, plan roughly 0.5 litres of water per participant, plus two hot drinks per person. Chill drinks before the room opens and keep a separate supply available during practical exercises.
  • Match protective equipment to the largest exercise group, not the total attendance. For simultaneous practice, provide one pair of safety goggles, heat-resistant gloves and a safety helmet per participant, with at least two spare sets.
  • Test the laptop, projector, projection screen, extension cords and power strips before participants arrive. Bring one spare extension cord and keep cables away from marked escape routes and the practice area.
  • Set aside a clearly marked practice area with barrier cones and check that the fire blankets, first aid kit, smoke detector and training extinguishers are ready before opening the room. Confirm the smoke machine and fire hose reel are suitable for the planned exercises.

Frequently asked questions

How much water and coffee do I need for fire safety training?
For a half-day session, allow about 0.5 litres of water and two hot drinks per participant. Add 10% extra cups and glasses so a spill or second drink does not interrupt the session.
How many safety helmets and goggles are needed for training?
Provide one helmet and one pair of safety goggles per person taking part in an exercise at the same time. Buy or bring at least two spare sets, and use the same approach for heat-resistant gloves.
When should I arrange fire training equipment?
Confirm the training extinguishers, fire hose reel, smoke machine and related equipment at least 1–2 weeks before the session. This gives you time to check delivery, collection and compatibility with the planned exercises.
What presentation equipment should I bring to fire safety training?
Bring a laptop, projector, projection screen, extension cords and power strips, and test them before the room opens. Pack one spare extension cord and check the setup at least 30 minutes before participants arrive.
