Field hockey tournament shopping list

A field hockey tournament needs more than goals, balls and sticks. Plan supplies for matches, team check-in, hydration, shade, changing areas and the gaps that appear when equipment is shared across several pitches. This shopping list covers the practical items to buy or bring, from spare balls and scoreboards to water crates, coolers, tables and power supplies. Check quantities against your number of teams, pitches and match times before loading the transport.

Tips

  • Prepare at least 2–3 hockey balls per pitch in play, plus a separate reserve supply. Keep spare sticks, a pump and replacement goal nets together so a broken item does not stop a match.
  • Plan drinking water for the full tournament day: allow roughly 2–3 litres per player, with extra water for referees and volunteers. Use water jugs at the pitches and bottle crates near the team area.
  • Pack one scoreboard, stopwatch and whistle for each active pitch, then add at least one spare whistle and stopwatch. Print the match schedule and team sheets before leaving, because a printer at the venue may not be reliable.
  • For an outdoor tournament, provide one party tent or covered area for registration and first aid, and add parasols where teams wait between matches. Bring tables, chairs and clothes racks before the teams arrive; these are easy to overlook during equipment loading.
  • Bring extension cords and power strips only after checking the venue's power points. Keep laptops, tablets and the printer in a dry, covered area, and take walkie-talkies if officials or volunteers will be spread across multiple fields.

Frequently asked questions

How many hockey balls do I need for a tournament?
Allow 2–3 balls per pitch in use, plus at least 10 spare balls for a multi-pitch tournament. Keep the spare balls in a marked container beside the officials' area so they can be reached quickly.
How much water should I buy for a field hockey tournament?
Plan 2–3 litres per player for a full tournament day, plus approximately 1 litre per referee and volunteer. Add a 10–15% reserve for warm weather, delays and refill needs.
What equipment should I have for each hockey pitch?
Each active pitch needs goals with nets, balls, cones or marker discs, a whistle, a stopwatch and a scoreboard. Prepare one complete set per pitch and check everything at least 24 hours before the first match.
When should I buy snacks and chill the drinks?
Buy packaged snacks and drinks 1–2 days before the tournament. Chill drinks overnight where possible, then load coolers and water crates shortly before departure so they stay cold during transport.
