What to Bring for a Family Bike Ride
A family bike ride needs more than bikes and helmets. Plan supplies for the start area, the route and the people supporting the ride, including drinks, snacks, basic repairs and visible route marking. Buy food and beverages from your final participant count, then add a small reserve for volunteers and unexpected delays. Pack repair equipment, spare tubes and communication gear before the day, because these are easy to overlook until someone has a flat tire or a route change.
The full checklist for this plan is being updated. The tips and answers below still apply.
Tips
- Plan around 500–750 ml of water per rider for a short ride, and add extra drinks for volunteers and warm weather. Fill coolers before departure so the first stop does not depend on a nearby shop.
- Allow 2–3 snack portions per person for a ride lasting 2–3 hours. Pack a few extra portions for late arrivals, children who tire early and volunteers stationed at the checkpoint.
- Bring at least 1 spare inner tube for every 10–15 bikes, plus 2 tire levers, a bike pump and a repair kit. Check that the tools fit the bikes being used before packing them.
- Prepare one clearly marked safety vest for each escort or route volunteer, and bring cones, route arrows and barrier tape for junctions and the bike checkpoint. Pack these separately so they can be distributed quickly at briefing time.
- Take a charged mobile phone and power bank for each key organiser, with at least 1 walkie-talkie per communication team if the route has poor reception. Pack extension cords and power strips only for the start area, and test them before setup.
