What you need for a dog sports competition

A dog sports competition needs more than obstacles and a stopwatch. You need clearly marked rings, numbered competitors, water for dogs, scorekeeping supplies, shelter and a simple registration setup. Plan quantities around the number of dogs and volunteers, then add a small reserve for damaged bibs, spilled water and unexpected weather. This shopping list covers the practical equipment and serving items to have ready before competitors arrive.

Tips

  • Set out at least one water bowl in each competition ring, plus one spare bowl. Match the number of water containers to the distance between the rings and refill points so handlers are not crossing the course during heats.
  • Prepare one bib or race number for every registered dog, then bring 5–10 spare numbers. Keep lanyards at the registration desk so volunteers can issue replacements quickly if a number is lost.
  • Use one stopwatch for each active timing point, with at least one backup stopwatch. Put score sheets, measuring tapes, whistles and pens together at the judges’ table before the first run.
  • Allow one foldable table for registration, one judges’ table and one prize table. Add seating for judges and registration volunteers, and place waste bins and dog-waste pickup supplies near the entrance and competition rings.
  • Buy or borrow shelter before checking the final weather forecast: party tents, weighted bags and crowd-control barriers need to be secured before competitors arrive. Pack reusable cups, plates, coffee pots and teapots according to the number of volunteers and expected spectators.

Frequently asked questions

How much water do I need for a dog sports competition?
Plan at least one water container and one bowl per competition ring, plus a spare container for busy periods or warm weather. Refill them before the first run and check them at least every 30 minutes.
How many bib numbers should I order for a dog competition?
Prepare one bib or race number for every registered dog and add 5–10% spares. For 40 dogs, that means at least 42 numbers, with 4–8 extra recommended for replacements.
What scoring supplies are needed for a dog sports competition?
Provide printed score sheets for every run, one stopwatch per active timing point, measuring tapes, whistles and a scoreboard. Print 10% more score sheets than the number of planned runs in case of reruns or mistakes.
When should I set up the dog competition equipment?
Set up the rings, obstacles, signs, cones, barriers and water stations at least 2 hours before registration opens. Put prizes and printed starting lists in place 30–60 minutes before the first start.
