What to bring for a dog camping weekend

A dog camping weekend needs more than tents and food. You are setting up a temporary campsite, serving meals outdoors and keeping several dogs comfortable throughout the day. This checklist covers the shared equipment and supplies for camp setup, cooking, drinks, lighting and dog care. Check dog rules, dietary requirements and emergency contacts before shopping, then confirm quantities after final registrations.

Tips

  • Count people and dogs separately before buying supplies. Plan one reusable plate, bowl, cup and cutlery set per person, plus at least two extra sets for replacements and late arrivals.
  • Allow two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then one drink per person per hour. Fill the coolers before guests arrive and keep a separate supply of water for the dogs.
  • Pack one collapsible crate or resting space for each dog that needs quiet time. Place dog water stations in at least two separate areas so dogs do not crowd one bowl.
  • Check gas cylinders, extension cords and power strips at least three days before departure. A missing connector or empty cylinder is difficult to replace once the group is at the campsite.
  • Bring lighting for both the shared area and the route back to the tents. Set up LED light strings and lanterns before dark, and keep power banks available for phones and emergency calls.

Frequently asked questions

How much food and drink should I buy for a dog camping weekend?
For drinks, allow two to three per person during the first hour and one per person for every hour after that. Add extra water for dogs and keep enough food for the full programme plus one spare meal per five guests.
How many reusable plates, cups and bowls do I need?
Buy or pack one set per registered guest, then add two to four spare sets depending on group size. Bring at least one separate bowl per dog for feeding or water, with extra bowls at shared water stations.
What camping equipment should I check before leaving?
Check tent pitches, ground tarps, herring, guy ropes and collapsible crates at least three days before the weekend. Set up a tent or tarp once at home if it has not been used recently, so missing parts are found before departure.
When should I prepare the dog welcome packs and first aid kit?
Prepare the welcome packs and check the first aid and dog kit two to three days before arrival. Recheck medication, emergency contacts and dog details on the morning of departure.
