What you need for a cybersecurity training day

A cybersecurity training day needs more than laptops and a projector. You will also need a reliable practice network, enough power and cables, printed worksheets, account details, and refreshments for the full session. Plan equipment for every participant, plus one presentation laptop and a few spare connection options. Buy or collect catering supplies early, especially if attendees have dietary requirements, and check that the practice environment works before participants arrive.

Tips

  • Provide one laptop per participant and keep at least one spare available. Test every device, user account, USB stick, and training exercise before the room opens.
  • Bring a wireless router, network switch, and enough network cables for each practice station, plus two spare cables. Isolate the exercise network from the organisation’s live network.
  • Allow one power outlet and one charging position per laptop where possible. Use power strips and extension cords, but label them and test the arrangement before the training starts.
  • Prepare printed training materials and worksheets for every registered participant, with two extra sets. Keep certificates, markers, and flip-chart paper at the reception desk or trainer’s table.
  • For refreshments, plan two to three drinks per person for the first hour and one drink per person for each additional hour. Set out cups, glasses, plates, cutlery, serving bowls, and waste bins before the first break.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for cybersecurity training?
Plan one working laptop per participant, one presentation laptop, a projector, a projection screen, and a separate practice network. Bring a wireless router, network switch, cables, USB sticks, and at least one spare laptop or cable.
How many laptops should I bring for a cybersecurity workshop?
Bring one laptop for every registered participant and add at least one spare for failures or late registrations. If participants work in pairs, two people can share one device, but individual laptops are better for hands-on exercises.
How much coffee and water do I need for training?
Allow two to three drinks per person during the first hour and one drink per person for every hour after that. Add extra water and coffee for the trainer and keep a small reserve for late arrivals.
When should I test the cybersecurity training network?
Test the router, switch, cables, accounts, and practice environment at least one working day before the session. Repeat a quick connection test 30 to 60 minutes before participants arrive.
