What to buy for a curling tournament

A curling tournament needs more than stones and brooms. You also need enough sliding soles or curling shoes for players, clear scorekeeping supplies, registration equipment and food-service items for breaks. Use the participant count and tournament format to calculate catering, then check rink-provided equipment before buying anything. Arrange prizes, printed forms and chilled groceries in advance so the competition day is spent on matches rather than last-minute errands.

Tips

  • Check with the rink at least 2 weeks before the tournament to confirm which stones, brooms, shoes, sliding soles, grippers and starting blocks are included. Buy or hire only the missing equipment, and allow one spare set for damaged or misplaced items.
  • Prepare one scorekeeping station for every match running at the same time. For each station, provide a scoreboard, scoreboard numbers, competition forms and at least 2 pens, then bring extra forms and 10 spare pens for the whole tournament.
  • Set up registration at least 45 minutes before the first match. Keep the laptop, printer, participant list, mobile phone and emergency contacts together at the registration desk, with extension cords and power strips tested before players arrive.
  • Calculate food and drinks from confirmed registrations and dietary requirements, not from the invitation list. Chill perishable groceries several hours before serving and keep reusable cups, coffee cups, plates, cutlery sets and serving platters ready before the first break.
  • Order prizes and cups at least 2 weeks ahead and collect them before tournament day. Count one prize or cup for every planned placing, plus 1 extra award if your format includes a special recognition.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a curling tournament?
Plan for curling stones, brooms, sliding soles or curling shoes, grippers, starting blocks, course markings and scoreboards. Check the rink inventory at least 2 weeks beforehand, because many venues already provide the main playing equipment.
How many scoreboards and stopwatches do I need?
You need 1 scoreboard and 1 stopwatch for each match played simultaneously. Add at least 1 spare stopwatch and enough scoreboard numbers and competition forms for every scheduled match, plus 10 extra forms for changes.
How much catering should I buy for a curling tournament?
Base quantities on the final registration count and include every volunteer and referee who will eat. Confirm dietary requirements no later than 7 days before the event, then buy chilled and perishable food on the day before or the morning of the tournament.
When should I order curling tournament prizes?
Order prizes and cups at least 2 weeks before the tournament, especially if they need engraving or special preparation. Collect and count them before event day, with 1 spare award if the tournament has an extra recognition category.
