What you need for a computer course for seniors

A computer course for seniors needs more than a few laptops and a projector. Each participant should have a working laptop, charger, mouse and a clear place to follow the exercises. You will also need presentation equipment, spare connection cables, printed worksheets and refreshments such as coffee, tea and pastries. Buy or collect the consumables early, then test every device and cable before the course starts.

Tips

  • Plan one laptop, charger and mouse per participant, plus at least one spare laptop and mouse if the group is larger than 10. Test the batteries and power connections on the day before.
  • Bring one presentation laptop, projector, projection screen and HDMI cable, with a spare HDMI cable available. Check the presentation on the actual equipment at least 24 hours beforehand.
  • Allow two coffee or tea servings per person for a morning course, and add about 10% extra cups, glasses, teaspoons and pastries. Set out thermos flasks so refreshments remain available during the exercises.
  • Provide one USB stick for every two participants if files need to be saved or exchanged. Check that the laptops can read the sticks before participants arrive.
  • Pack extension cords, power strips, cleaning cloths and waste bins before opening the classroom. Set up and test the Wi-Fi router at least 30 minutes before registration starts.
