What you need for a clothing market
A clothing market needs more than donated clothes and a few tables. Shoppers need clear prices, size labels, changing rooms, mirrors and an easy way to pay. Behind the scenes, you need crates or bins for sorting, spare hangers and a way to keep clothing off the floor. This shopping list covers the practical equipment, serving items and signs to prepare before setup, including the items people most often arrange too late.

Tips
- Plan one clothes rack for each main clothing category or sales section, then add storage crates or clothing bins for overflow. Reserve racks early if you are borrowing or hiring them.
- Allow about 10 to 15 hangers per metre of rack space, with extra hangers available after sorting. Size labels and category cards should be ready before clothing is laid out.
- Provide at least one changing-room screen and one mirror for each busy sales area. Put directional signs at the entrance and fitting-room signs where shoppers can see them.
- Prepare a cash register, payment terminal, extension cords and power strips several days before the market. Test the terminal and bring enough change once the prices have been set.
- If you are serving coffee or tea, use one coffee maker and one kettle per serving station, plus thermos flasks to keep drinks available during the busiest hour. Set out reusable cups, coffee cups and teaspoons before doors open.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a clothing market?
- You need tables, clothes racks, hangers, changing-room screens, mirrors, storage crates or clothing bins, price signs and size labels. Add a cash register or payment terminal, power equipment and basic cleaning tools before setup day.
- How many hangers do I need for a clothing market?
- Plan for roughly 10 to 15 hangers per metre of rack space, then add at least 20 percent extra for sorting and replacements. Buying or collecting them after the clothing arrives usually leaves too little time.
- How many changing rooms should a clothing market have?
- Start with one changing room for every 30 to 40 shoppers expected at the busiest time, and provide at least one mirror per fitting area. Set up screens and signs before clothing is put on the racks.
- When should I prepare the payment equipment?
- Check the cash register, payment terminal, cables and power strips at least three days before the market. Collect the change after prices are final and test the payment connection again on the morning of the event.
