What to bring for a cleanup walk and neighborhood drinks
Plan for two separate parts: the cleanup walk and the drinks afterwards. You will need enough gloves, litter pickers and bags for each participant, plus route signs and registration supplies at the starting point. Coffee, tea, water and coolers keep people comfortable after the walk, while a first aid kit and tick remover cover common outdoor problems. Check quantities against your registrations before shopping, and keep spare equipment for late arrivals or damaged supplies.

Tips
- Buy or borrow one litter picker and one pair of reusable work gloves per participant, plus at least 10% extra. Spares prevent the whole group from waiting when equipment is missing or breaks.
- Allow several trash bags per team rather than one per route. Keep refill bags at marked collection points so full bags do not have to be carried back to the start.
- Prepare one registration set for the start table: printed participant lists, route maps, registration forms, clipboards, pens and name stickers. Pack these in a waterproof folder before leaving.
- Bring route signs, cones, barrier tape and reflective vests before participants arrive. Outdoor signs are easy to forget and much harder to arrange once teams have left.
- For the drinks, use thermos flasks for coffee and tea and coolers for cold drinks. Pack hand sanitizer, a first aid kit and a tick remover with the cleanup equipment, not in a separate vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
- How many litter pickers and gloves do I need per person?
- Plan on one litter picker and one pair of reusable work gloves per participant. Add at least 10% extra of each, so a group of 30 needs 33 pickers and 33 pairs of gloves.
- How many trash bags should I buy for a neighborhood cleanup?
- There is no fixed number because route length and litter levels vary, but budget at least 3 bags per team as a starting point. Add refill bags for collection points and keep 10% extra for torn or overfilled bags.
- What drinks and equipment do I need after the cleanup walk?
- Bring coffee, tea and water, using thermos flasks for hot drinks and coolers for cold drinks. For planning, allow about 2 drinks per person after the walk, plus extra cups and supplies for late arrivals.
- What safety supplies should I bring to an outdoor cleanup?
- Pack reflective vests, barrier tape, cones, hand sanitizer, a first aid kit and a tick remover. Have these at the start point before the walk begins, rather than leaving them in a car that may move during the event.
