What you need for a canoe slalom competition

A canoe slalom competition needs more than boats, paddles and a course. You also need enough safety equipment for every paddler, reliable timing and communication gear, and practical supplies for a full day beside the water. Use this list to check what must be bought, borrowed or reserved before race day. The items below cover the competition area, officials, participants and basic event operations without duplicating the task plan.

Tips

  • Count one life jacket and one kayak helmet per paddler using the course, then keep spare equipment available for damaged or poorly fitting gear. Do not leave checking sizes and condition until the morning of the competition.
  • Plan at least one rescue kayak, throw line and life ring for each active safety position required by your water and safety plan. Keep rescue equipment at the water’s edge, not inside a distant storage area.
  • Use electronic timekeeping as the primary system and keep stopwatches as a manual backup. Test the timing setup before the event and charge every walkie-talkie and radio charger the day before.
  • Bring waterproof carry bags for documents, phones and other equipment that may be exposed to spray or rain. Pack spare power banks, extension cords and power strips so registration and timing can continue if the venue’s outlets are limited.
  • Provide shelter, tables, chairs and waste bins at the competition area, especially if officials and participants will be there for several hours. Check the number of tents and tables against the registration size rather than estimating from the venue alone.

Frequently asked questions

How many kayaks and paddles do I need for a canoe slalom competition?
Provide one competition kayak and one race paddle for each paddler who needs event equipment. Add spare kayaks and spare paddles so a damaged boat or paddle does not stop a run; the exact number depends on the number of registered competitors and available venue equipment.
What safety equipment is needed for canoe slalom?
At minimum, plan suitable life jackets and kayak helmets for paddlers, plus rescue kayaks, throw lines and life rings for the safety operation. Confirm the required quantities with the water rules and rescue plan before ordering, ideally several weeks before competition day.
What timing equipment should I bring to a canoe slalom competition?
Use electronic timekeeping together with stopwatches as a backup, and bring a laptop, printer, walkie-talkies, chargers and power banks. Test all timing and communication equipment at least one day before the event, not when the first group is ready to start.
Do I need tents and tables for a canoe slalom competition?
For a full-day competition, plan sheltered space with party tents, tables, chairs and waste bins for registration, officials and participant services. Confirm the layout and power access at least one week ahead, then move the equipment to the water’s edge before setup begins.
