Canoe race shopping list
A canoe race needs more than canoes and paddles. You need enough safety equipment for every participant, clear course and start markers, reliable timing gear, and a way to coordinate people on the water and shore. Buy or collect the items early, especially life jackets, spare paddles, walkie-talkies and first aid supplies. This list also covers practical race-day equipment, refreshments and setup items so missing basics do not delay the start.

Tips
- Plan one properly fitted life jacket and one safety helmet for every participant who needs them, plus extra vests for volunteers and officials. Check sizes before race day rather than discovering gaps at registration.
- Keep at least one spare paddle available for each active start group, and inspect every competition canoe, paddle and life jacket before participants arrive. Damaged equipment is difficult to replace once the race has started.
- Use clearly visible start and finish flags, competition buoys and barrier tape to mark the course. Set them out during setup and walk or paddle the route once before the first start.
- Prepare timing and registration equipment together: stopwatches, bib numbers, a laptop, printer, extension cords and waterproof storage. Print a small reserve of bib numbers in case one is lost or damaged.
- Place first aid kits, emergency blankets, throw lines, life rings and waterproof flashlights where the safety team can reach them within minutes. Keep the lifeboat and walkie-talkies ready before the first canoe enters the course.
Frequently asked questions
- How many life jackets do I need for a canoe race?
- Prepare one suitable life jacket for every person on the water, including participants, safety crew and anyone using a lifeboat. Add at least 10% spare jackets where possible, with a minimum of two extras for a small race.
- How many spare paddles should I bring to a canoe race?
- Bring at least one spare paddle for every active start group, and two or three extras for a larger race. Check that the spare paddles match the canoes and are stored close to the launch area.
- What safety equipment is needed for a canoe race?
- Have a lifeboat, life rings, throw lines, first aid kits, emergency blankets, safety helmets, vests, waterproof flashlights and walkie-talkies ready before the start. Put the safety team in position at least 30 minutes before the first race.
- When should I prepare the canoe race supplies?
- Check boats, paddles, life jackets and safety equipment at least 2 days before the event. Set out course markers, timing equipment, bib numbers and communications equipment on race day at least 60 minutes before registration or the first start.
