Camping weekend shopping list
A camping weekend needs more than tents and sleeping bags. Plan the shared shopping around meals, drinks, cooking, washing up, lighting and basic safety, then check what the campsite already provides. Pack food in advance and fill the coolers before you leave so arrival is about setting up camp, not finding a shop. Use the plan below to keep shared supplies together and make sure every camper knows what they need to bring personally.

Tips
- Pack shared food by meal and prepare anything that can be made ahead at home. Keep chilled items in coolers, and bring enough drinking water for the journey as well as the weekend.
- Allow two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then plan roughly one drink per person per hour. Bring extra water for cooking, coffee and washing up if the campsite supply is uncertain.
- Pack one reusable plate, bowl, cup, mug and cutlery set per person, plus at least two serving spoons and one pair of grill tongs. These are easy to forget when meals are planned but tableware is not.
- Take lighting for both the camp kitchen and the route back to the tents: plan one lantern for each shared area and one headlamp per person who may move around after dark. Check batteries before departure.
- Keep the first aid kit, hammer, herring and fire-safety buckets together rather than buried in the load. Put the first aid kit where everyone can find it within 30 seconds of arriving.
Frequently asked questions
- What food should I buy for a camping weekend?
- Plan three meals per full day, plus two snacks and drinks for each person. Buy food that can be prepared with the barbecue and shared kitchen equipment, and pack chilled items in coolers immediately before departure.
- How much water do I need for a camping weekend?
- Allow at least 2 litres of drinking water per person per day, before adding water for cooking, coffee and washing up. For a group of 10 staying two nights, that means at least 40 litres for drinking alone.
- How many tents and sleeping mats do I need?
- Count one sleeping place per person and check the tent capacity before packing. For two-person tents, two campers need one tent and two sleeping mats; add one extra mat or sleeping place if the group includes a child or someone who may need separate space.
- What should I pack for lighting at a campsite?
- Plan one shared lantern for the kitchen or seating area, one additional light for the route to the toilets, and one headlamp per person who may walk around after dark. Test batteries at least one day before leaving and pack spares.
