Camping trip shopping list: what to pack and buy

This camping trip shopping list covers the equipment and kitchen supplies you need to set up camp, cook meals and keep everyone comfortable. Plan one sleeping mat and sleeping bag per person, then match tent capacity to the group size. For the camp kitchen, allow at least one large cooler, two water jerry cans and enough reusable tableware for the whole group. Check gas, batteries and rain protection before you leave rather than at the campsite.

Tips

  • Count sleeping mats, sleeping bags and camping cushions by person, and add one spare sleeping mat if space allows. A missing sleeping bag is difficult to replace after arrival.
  • Use one four-person tent for every four campers at most; leave room for luggage and wet clothing instead of filling every sleeping space.
  • Take two coolers if the group is large: keep drinks in one and perishable food in the other. Freeze the ice packs before departure and store chilled food immediately after shopping.
  • Bring one headlamp or flashlight per person, plus spare batteries. Charge rechargeable batteries the day before leaving, not on the morning of departure.
  • Pack the camp kitchen as one unit: camping stoves, gas cylinders, cookware, frying pans, cutting boards, kitchen knives and serving spoons. Check the gas supply before loading the car.

Frequently asked questions

How many tents do I need for a camping trip?
Plan no more than four people per four-person tent, and use additional tents when the group needs separate sleeping arrangements. Check the tent count at least one week before departure so there is time to borrow or reserve replacements.
How much water should I bring camping?
Pack at least 3 litres of drinking and cooking water per person per day, unless the campsite provides reliable potable water. Two water jerry cans make transport and refilling easier for a group.
What food storage do I need for a camping trip?
Use at least one cooler with frozen ice packs for perishable food, and add a second cooler for drinks when there are more than six campers. Keep chilled food below 7Β°C and put it away as soon as shopping is finished.
How many plates, bowls and cups should I pack?
Bring one reusable plate, bowl and cup per person, plus two spare sets for breakage or unexpected participants. Wash the tableware after each meal and pack it in a storage crate so it stays clean during transport.
