What you need for a boxing match

A boxing match needs more than gloves and a ring. You will need equipment for the boxers, officials, medical cover, timing, scoring, communication and the audience. Check the ring, ropes, corners and mats early, then confirm that every electrical item works at the venue. Buy or bring drinking water, towels and mouthguards before match day, because these are easy to overlook when attention is focused on registrations and the schedule.

Tips

  • Check the ring floor, ropes, corners and mats several days before the match, not during setup. Damaged or missing parts can delay the first bout.
  • Prepare separate boxing gloves, hand wraps, head protection and mouthguards for every competition class. Keep spare items available rather than relying on one shared set.
  • Count water bottles and towels by boxer, with extra supplies for the full programme. A simple allowance is at least two bottles and one fresh towel per boxer.
  • Test the bell, round timer, stopwatches, scoreboards, microphone and speakers before doors open. Bring extension cords and power strips that reach the jury tables and ringside.
  • Set aside equipment for officials and volunteers, including tables for the jury and walkie-talkies. Label the judging and medical areas so these items do not get moved during setup.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a boxing match?
At minimum, plan for a boxing ring with a suitable floor, ropes, corners and mats, plus gloves, hand wraps, head protection and mouthguards. You also need a bell, round timer, scoreboards, stopwatches and a microphone.
How many water bottles should I buy for a boxing match?
Allow at least two bottles per boxer for the event, then add extra bottles for referees, judges and volunteers. For 20 boxers, that means a starting point of 40 bottles before adding a reserve.
What should I bring for the jury and timekeepers?
Provide tables for the jury, scoreboards, stopwatches, a round timer and a bell. Test all timing and scoring equipment at least 1 hour before the first bout.
When should boxing equipment be checked?
Check the ring, ropes, mats, gloves and protective equipment several days before the match. Repeat the inspection during setup and finish the final safety check at least 1 hour before the audience enters.
