What you need for a biathlon competition

A biathlon competition needs more than skis and rifles. You will need separate equipment for the course, shooting ranges, timing, registration, safety and the catering point. Buy or reserve the items with limited availability first, especially biathlon rifles, ski sets, targets and shooting mats. Use the participant count to work out bib numbers, ammunition, drinks, soup, bread and printed documents, then keep spares for damaged equipment and last-minute changes.

Tips

  • Plan at least one ski set, rifle and set of poles per simultaneous competitor, plus spare skis and poles for equipment failures. Confirm quantities with the final starter groups before ordering.
  • Order targets and reserve target boards early. For a small event, keep at least 10% spare target boards and enough blank or competition ammunition for every planned shooting round plus a 10% buffer.
  • Count bib numbers, printed starting lists and registration supplies against the final registration list, not the invitation list. Print the lists after starter groups and start numbers have been assigned.
  • Provide one visible safety sign at every shooting-range approach and use course tape, cones, arrows and fences at crossings and turns. Have reflective vests available for every course marshal and safety volunteer.
  • Prepare catering quantities from confirmed registrations and dietary requirements. Chill drinks before setup, and allow enough tables, chairs, waste bins and coat-rack space for the registration and catering points.

Frequently asked questions

How many biathlon rifles do I need for a competition?
Provide one rifle for each competitor shooting at the same time, based on your range capacity and starter groups. Keep training guns available for testing or instruction, and arrange at least 10% spare capacity where possible.
How much ammunition should I buy for a biathlon competition?
Calculate ammunition for every registered competitor and every scheduled shooting round, then add a 10% buffer for misfires, damaged rounds and replacements. Keep blank training ammunition separate from competition ammunition and check the rules before ordering.
How many spare skis and poles should I bring?
For up to 20 competitors, bring at least two spare ski sets and two spare pole pairs; for larger fields, add roughly 10% spare equipment. Check sizes and bindings before race day rather than relying on generic replacements.
When should I print the starting lists and bib numbers?
Print them after registration closes and starter groups, start numbers and dietary requirements have been checked. Aim to finish this at least 24 hours before the competition so bibs can be sorted and the registration desk can be set up quickly.
