What to buy for a beach camp

A beach camp needs more than tents and sleeping bags. Plan separate supplies for sleeping, cooking, serving food, keeping drinks cold and spending time on the sand. Count reusable plates, bowls, cups and cutlery for every participant, plus a small buffer for loss or damage. Pack chilled food in coolers with ice containers, and keep emergency information and first-aid supplies easy to reach rather than buried in a storage bin.

Tips

  • Count one plate, bowl, cup and set of cutlery per participant, then add 10% extra. Serving platters and jugs should be counted separately because they are shared rather than issued to individuals.
  • Allow one sleeping mat and one sleeping bag per person, with a cushion if participants are not bringing their own. Check every tent with its ground tarp, herring and tent hammer before loading the transport.
  • Use at least two coolers for a larger group: one for food and one for drinks. Add ice containers and thermos flasks so chilled food stays separate from hot coffee or water.
  • For the cooking area, pack one barbecue for each cooking station, plus cooking tongs, cutting boards, chef’s knives and bread knives. Bring measuring cups and kettles if the menu includes drinks or measured ingredients.
  • Choose beach equipment by group size rather than buying one item for everyone. A few footballs, beach volleyballs and frisbees give participants options without filling the transport with duplicate gear.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to buy for a beach camp?
Plan for five groups of supplies: camping equipment, cooking gear, reusable tableware, food and drinks, and beach activities. For each participant, count one sleeping mat, sleeping bag, plate, bowl, cup and set of cutlery, then add about 10% spare tableware.
How many cups and plates do I need for a beach camp?
Provide one reusable cup, plate, bowl and cutlery set per participant, plus 10% extra. For 20 people, that means 22 of each personal item; serving platters and jugs are shared equipment and do not need to match the headcount.
How many coolers do I need for a beach camp?
Use at least two coolers for a group: one for perishable food and one for drinks. Chill the food before departure and pack ice or ice containers immediately before leaving, ideally no more than 2 hours before transport.
What camping supplies are easy to forget for a beach camp?
Ground tarps, herring and tent hammers are commonly missed because the tent itself is packed first. Check these items at least 24 hours before departure, and count one sleeping mat and sleeping bag for every participant.
