What you need for an archery competition

An archery competition needs more than bows, arrows and targets. You’ll also need spare equipment, clear range boundaries, scoring materials, safety gear and enough seating for participants, officials and spectators. Use the shopping list to prepare the shooting area, registration point and refreshment space before competition day. Check quantities against your participant list, competition format and venue layout, then buy or hire anything with a lead time of at least one to two weeks.

Tips

  • Plan at least one spare bow and several spare arrows for every shooting group, so a damaged item does not stop the competition. Inspect all equipment before the event rather than waiting until setup.
  • Allow enough target discs and stands for every active shooting lane, plus replacements for damaged targets. Measure the range before ordering so the target layout, safety nets and barrier tape fit the space.
  • Use safety nets, bollards, cones and barrier tape to create a clear separation between the shooting range and spectators. Put the stop sign and competition flags where every archer and volunteer can see them.
  • Prepare one scorecard and a visible scoreboard for each competition group or lane. Print race number vests, signage and volunteer instructions at least two days before the event.
  • Provide tables and chairs for registration, the jury and refreshments, with waste bins near the catering area. If party tents are needed, arrange them several days ahead and check the weather forecast before final setup.

Frequently asked questions

How many spare arrows do I need for an archery competition?
Plan at least 10% spare arrows in addition to the competition quantity, with a minimum of 10 spare arrows for a small event. Keep them in arrow bags or tube holders near the range so replacements are quick to issue.
What safety equipment is needed for an archery competition?
Use safety nets, bollards, barrier tape, cones, a stop sign and whistles to control the range. Set up and test the safety boundary before participants arrive, leaving at least 60 minutes for a final inspection.
How many targets and target stands should I buy?
You need one target disc and one goal stand for each shooting lane used at the same time. Add at least one spare target disc and stand per 10 active lanes, or one complete spare set for smaller competitions.
When should I order prizes and competition equipment?
Order prizes, trophies and any hired equipment at least two weeks before competition day. Check bows, arrows, targets, scoreboards and protective gear one week before, then repeat the equipment check during setup.
