What you need for an AED training session
An AED training session needs more than practice AEDs and CPR manikins. You also need enough training pads, spare batteries, presentation equipment, seating and refreshments for the full group. Plan the practical supplies around the number of participants and practice stations, not just the instructorβs equipment list. This checklist also covers items that are easy to arrange too late, such as extension cords, certificates, cups and waste bins.

Tips
- Allow one practice AED and one CPR manikin for each practice station, then add at least one spare set if the group is large or the session runs in several rounds.
- Check every AED trainer, cable and battery before the training day. Keep spare batteries available, because testing equipment only when participants arrive leaves no time to solve a fault.
- Prepare the room with one chair per participant, tables for the practice stations and a separate registration desk. Check the emergency exits before setting up furniture.
- For a half-day session, plan roughly two drinks per participant for the first hour and refillable water for the remaining time. Set out mugs, glasses, a coffee maker, thermos flasks and serving trays before registration opens.
- Pack a laptop, projector, projection screen, extension cords and power strips together in one labelled box. Add stopwatches and a flip chart so practice timing and group instructions do not depend on the presentation equipment.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for AED training?
- For each practice station, plan one practice AED, one CPR manikin and a set of AED training pads. Keep spare batteries and compatible cables on hand, and check everything at least one day before the session.
- How many CPR manikins do I need for an AED course?
- Use one CPR manikin per practice station so participants do not spend most of the session waiting. For example, a group of 12 works efficiently with 3 to 4 stations, depending on the instructorβs rotation plan.
- What should I provide for an AED training venue?
- Provide tables and chairs, a registration desk, a coat rack, projector and screen, plus extension cords and power strips. Check the room layout and emergency exits at least 30 minutes before participants arrive.
- What refreshments should I buy for AED training?
- For a half-day course, provide water for everyone and plan about two drinks per person during the first hour, followed by regular refills. Bring mugs, glasses, serving trays, a coffee maker, thermos flasks and water jugs, plus plates and cutlery if food is served.
